AMD EPYC 8005 Sorano Completely Changes AMD SP6
AMD has announced the Versal Premium Gen 2 Memory on Package family, a new line of adaptive SoCs that integrate LPDDR5X memory directly onto the chip package. These chips are designed for customers seeking smaller, turn-key solutions for faster product development, addressing limitations of off-package memory found in standard Versal Premium Gen 2 parts. The announcement marks a significant strategic shift for AMD's programmable logic division (formerly Xilinx). Historically, AMD offered FPGAs and adaptive SoCs with on-package HBM memory, starting with the Virtex UltraScale+ HBM (2018, up to 16GB HBM1) and later the Versal HBM series (up to 32GB HBM2e). These chips provided high bandwidth and integration but tied production to both logic fabs and memory suppliers like SK hynix, Samsung, and Micron. However, the rapid evolution of HBM standards—three major specs in nine years—and the AI boom dramatically changed the landscape. Surging demand for HBM from AI accelerators (e.g., AMD's Instinct) made HBM2e scarce. By September 2025, AMD began discontinuing the Versal HBM series due to lack of HBM2e supply, as memory manufacturers shifted production to HBM3. This left AMD unable to produce more Versal HBM chips. Thus, the Versal Premium Gen 2 Memory on Package lineup pivots from HBM to LPDDR5X, ensuring longer product availability and more stable supply. The announcement coincides with the final day for orders of the Versal HBM chips, underscoring the urgency of the switch. This move reflects ongoing memory capacity constraints and AMD's adaptation to a market where high-bandwidth memory is increasingly allocated to AI workloads.
