AMD will acquire Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2 billion
AMD is acquiring World Labs, a developer of deep learning models for understanding physical reality, in an $8.2 billion deal announced today, positioning the chipmaker to compete with Nvidia in the AI chip ecosystem. World Labs justified the acquisition by saying AI development requires “close collaboration across model research, systems and compute,” while AMD says frontier workloads will shape its chip-making roadmap. Founder Fei-Fei Li joins AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. AMD and World Labs formed an inference optimization and training partnership last year, and Li appeared at AMD’s CES presentation earlier this year. Li, a Stanford computer science professor and AI pioneer, built the ImageNet database and its competitions. In 2024, she founded World Labs to develop models with a deeper understanding of the physical world, arguing true general intelligence needs grounding in physics and reasoning beyond text. Post-announcement, Li wrote that scaling World Labs’ breakthroughs beyond the lab requires “scaling our efforts, widening our reach, and getting closer to the hardware.” “World model” remains loosely defined—covering language models trained on visual inputs to high-fidelity reality simulators. World Labs’ first product, Marble, creates entertainment experiences and simulated environments for robot training. The $8.2 billion deal boosts AMD’s AI-specific chip competitiveness against rival Nvidia, which already offers open-weight world models like Cosmos. AMD currently only provides text and video models to the public. World models are vital for deploying generative AI on robotics—from autonomous vehicles to industrial and general-purpose humanoids. Scarce real-world training data means synthetic data from world models is key to visions from Tesla and Figure. Expected to
