KnowMade highlights scaling of GaN-based architectures for strategic markets

KnowMade’s latest monthly GaN research, technology and patent landscape monitoring, released on 15 June 2026, confirms that the global gallium nitride (GaN) ecosystem is gaining momentum as it moves deeper into mainstream semiconductor roadmaps, becoming a strategic platform across computing, communications, energy and defense. In April, the GaN landscape generated over 327 scientific publications and 362 new patent filings, with electronics accounting for the largest share (162 papers, 238 patents) and optoelectronics remaining dynamic (80 papers, 99 filings). Key developments in optoelectronics show micro-LED technologies expanding beyond displays into photonics, AI communications, and neurotechnology. Researchers from Toyohashi University of Technology, Meijo University, and others demonstrated a flexible InGaN micro-LED platform for neural stimulation and recording. Collaborations involving Max Planck Institute and ams OSRAM achieved hybrid integration of InGaN laser diodes onto silicon photonics platforms. Patent activity from Lumileds, Samsung Display, and others targets monolithic RGB integration and color conversion for AR/VR, automotive lighting. Industrial announcements from CEA-Leti, Mojo Vision, and Avicena point to replacing copper interconnects with micro-LED optical links for AI servers. In electronics, progress includes vertical GaN p-i-n diodes, normally-off vertical GaN FinFETs stable at high temperatures, and >10kV breakdown voltage vertical GaN PN diodes. Toshiba identified defect mechanisms in AlGaN-on-silicon structures. Patent filings from Infineon, EPC, and Raytheon focus on reliability, electrostatic control, and radiation tolerance. The overall trend confirms the industry is shifting from whether GaN can outperform silicon in niches to how rapidly companies can industrialize and scale GaN architectures for AI infrastructure, electric mobility, advanced photonics, and defense electronics.
