Snorkel AI triples valuation to $3.5B as demand for AI training data booms

2 h ago

Snorkel AI, an AI data infrastructure startup providing training datasets and simulated environments for AI labs and enterprises, has raised a $350 million Series E round at a $3.5 billion valuation, nearly tripling its $1.3 billion valuation from 17 months ago. The round was led by Insight Partners and S32, with participation from existing investors Addition, Lightspeed, Greylock, GV, and Wells Fargo. Snorkel originally focused on data-labeling automation software but shifted last year to offering completed datasets under a "data-as-a-service" model, using a hybrid approach that combines synthetic data generation with subject matter experts rather than a pure human marketplace. The company reports an annualized revenue run rate of $375 million, an eighteenfold increase over the past 12 months, driven by AI labs' insatiable demand for high-quality training data. Snorkel sells reinforcement learning (RL) environments and complete datasets, so payments to human experts are accounted for in cost of goods sold, unlike competitors such as Mercor (gross annualized revenue $2 billion), Handshake ($1 billion), and Micro1 ($500 million), which pay 60-70% of top-line income to domain specialists. Snorkel launched commercially in 2019 after four years of research at a Stanford AI lab led by co-founder and CEO Alex Ratner. The funding underscores the booming market for AI training data infrastructure, positioning Snorkel as a key player in the data-as-a-service segment for AI chip, GPU, and data center ecosystems.
