Seagate’s latest FireCuda Gen4 DRAMless consumer SSD, the FireCuda X1070, marks a surprising strategic shift. Instead of the expected Phison-based controller, the drive uses the Tenafe TC2201, a Gen4 DRAMless 4-channel NVMe SSD controller from a relatively unknown company. Tenafe, founded in 2019 with offices in California and China, specializes in client and enterprise SSD solutions and began sampling in 2021. This is one of its few public product appearances. The FireCuda X1070 is a Gen4 form factor 2280 SSD using the older NVMe 1.4 protocol, available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. The 2TB model tested features the Tenafe TC2201 controller and two Micron G8 232-layer 3D QLC NAND chips running at 2400MT/s. It is a single-sided, power-efficient design, making it suitable for ultrabooks and laptops. The SSD comes with a free 1-month Xbox Game Pass coupon and Seagate Tools software. It carries a 5-year limited warranty. However, pricing is concerning: $223 for 1TB, $459 for 2TB, and $829 for 4TB. For comparison, Samsung’s 4TB Gen5 DRAM-based SSD 9100 was priced at $799 at the time of the review. The X1070, being a value-oriented DRAMless Gen4 drive, appears overpriced relative to a premium Gen5 alternative. Performance details are not yet fully explored in the summary, but the review notes the pricing discrepancy and the unexpected controller choice as key points of interest.
