Amazon launches new $1 billion FDE org, following OpenAI and Anthropic
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a new internal organization dedicated to AI-focused forward-deployed engineers (FDEs), aiming to help companies integrate AI more effectively. Announced on Tuesday by AWS Vice President of Frontier AI Francessca Vasquez, the team will embed engineers within client companies to deploy purpose-built AI agents, emphasizing rapid engagements and enabling customer self-sufficiency. The initiative goes beyond building and maintaining systems; clients will gain lasting AI skills, workflows, and patterns to innovate independently. AWS has committed $1 billion in internal resources to the new org, though this is not a joint venture or conventional investment. The forward-deployed engineer model, pioneered by Palantir, involves contractor engineers working temporarily on-site with clients during system deployment, allowing direct response to emerging opportunities or challenges. This approach reuses technology across deployments while tailoring it to specific company needs, providing an influx of expertise and placing primary responsibility on the contractor. The main downside is the labor required to maintain a full corps of FDE engineers. Other AI labs have adopted similar strategies. OpenAI and Anthropic recently launched FDE joint ventures valued at $4 billion and $1.5 billion, respectively, pairing with private equity firms for capital and client connections. AWS’s new organization differs by using internal resources rather than external partnerships, focusing on fast deployments and long-term client capability building.
